Profile of the Faculty

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering was founded in 1953 as one of the basic faculties of the Railway College in Prague, which was moved as the University of Transport to Žilina at the beginning of the 60's. In Žilina, the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering was created. New age for the Faculty of Electrical Engineering began in 1992 when the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering was split and Faculty of Electrical Engineering was re-established again as a separate Faculty. The departments representing the basis of the Faculty exist for several decades. Their activities continuously created the main trend of the development of the Faculty both in scientific research and pedagogical area. Before re-establishment original activities of these departments were oriented mainly to technical aspects of classical transport. The fields, strongly supported by information and communication technologies, increased later.

Science and technology development typical for a recent period has caused changes in traditional activities. It concerns especially areas of information and communication systems, networks and services, development of power semiconductive systems and modern control of electrical networks. Study of interdisciplinary branches is also increasing, namely Mechatronics and Biomedical engineering.
Telecommunications, which have been developed separately at its own department since 1966 are oriented into areas of systems, networks and signals, mainly to audio and video digital signal processing as a support for development of multimedia technologies. System theory for telecommunication systems and networks based on IP and NGN networks and their applications are in the main focus of research and educational activities at this Department, too. In the past and recent years new fields of optoelectronics, optical digital switching and transmission systems were developed. The main priority appears to be in the broadband networks and services in general. In the field of radio communication there are the broadband, terrestrial, satellite and mobile networks.
In the field of control and information systems, the activities are mainly focused into problems of increasing safety and efficiency of transmitting information within automation systems of transport control and modernisation of safety facilities. Fields of safety and reliable transmission and processing of information are in spotlight of activities. Strong attention is given to intelligent transport systems and services.

In the field of electrical and power engineering, the most important seems to be task considered on modern traction drives for all kinds of transport, then problem of system and modern methods for their control, supplying electrical traction equipment with emphasis on their back influences on electrical power systems. A special attention is given to the electronically commuted electrical machines, electrical machines with permanent magnets, as well as to the properties of non sinusoidal supplied electric machines. In the field of electroenergy the main focus is on control of electrical power system, transmission and distribution of electrical energy, new renewable alternative energy sources, and electro-energetic feed of railways. Special attention is given into utilisation of different ICT and control systems for more efficient production and using of electrical energy mainly in environment of alternative energy resources.
In the area of physics the main emphasis is laid on experimental control of fundamental measurement of physical parameters, study of relevant physical phenomenon and methods of interpretation of experiments. Scientific work is oriented into study properties of condensed matters by acoustic and optical methods. Acousto-optic and acousto-electrical phenomena, critical phenomena and phenomena at interfaces take much attention, too. Study of wave fields and study in the field of elementary particles is developed in parallel.
In the field of theoretical and applied electrical engineering, except teaching of theoretical electrotechnics and electric measurement, the scientific and technical activities are oriented mainly into optimisation of diagnostic systems in transport and diagnostics of electric traction machines. From the viewpoint of newest trends, activities are targeted on solving problems of electromagnetic compatibility in broad frequency area.

Automation is deeply connected with mechatronics in different areas.
Permanently developed activity at the Faculty for more than 15 years is Biomedical Engineering realized in cooperation with the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University in Martin. In this field more departments established direct collaboration with departments at the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine. Main topics can be found in audio and video processing of medical signals applied in new methods of treatments, which are developed in close collaboration with professors and other experts in medicine.
In the field of electronics and electrotechnology, the activities are oriented into monitoring of quality and reliability of electronic components, materials and systems, control of quality and reliability according to IEC standards, application of programmable logical arrays, study reconfiguring circuits to computers, as well as diagnostic and analysis of failures and destructive analysis.
At the Institute of Aurel Stodola in Liptovský Mikuláš, the scientific work in mathematics is oriented into non-communicative theory of probability and real functions, in physics the work is oriented into diagnostics of physical properties of thin films and the modelling and numerical and stochastic evolutionary analysis of physical processes and optical devices and systems for optical communication. Solar concentration sources and impulse changers DC/AD in renewable energy resources are in the scope of the research, too.
